Behind the business with Moray London of Picture Lock Films

What does your organisation do?

We specialise in the creation and production of video, animation and infographics for businesses and organsiations of all shapes & sizes. Using our extensive background in TV production, we are able to bring the best creative thinking and production techniques to the content we make. We are able to provide a wide range of cost-effective content solutions that can be used by businesses internally for training, staff communications or conferences. We also provide content for use in a B2B or B2C setting to promote a company’s expertise, range of services or to help them win new business. We cover the whole of the UK, and have been providing innovative content solutions to our clients for over a decade.

What key challenges has your company recently faced?

Like all businesses, Coivd gave us a myriad of challenges, but fortunately our colleagues and suppliers have continued to operate and we have implemented Covid filming protocols so there hasn’t been an interruption in our ability to supply our clients. Working in a visual media, we benefit from being in the same room as clients when discussing ideas, storyboards and reviewing content, but with file sharing sites, video conferencing and even Facetime on our phones, we’ve been able to manage the production process and sign-off projects remotely.

What is your biggest achievement over the past 12 months?

All our content is made to broadcast standard and keeping this going through the last 12 months has been critical to ourselves and our clients. We’ve worked on a series of animations about the dangers of people smuggling for the UNHCR, for use in sub-Saharan Africa, and a commission to produce multiple Health & Safety assets for a large Multi-National company’s Learning Management System which they are rolling out across their 4000+ workforce.

What is your most important focus for the year, and what do you hope to achieve?

As well as continuing to undertake our TV production work, we’re looking to grow our portfolio of corporate work. For us, it’s all about the relationships we have with our clients, understanding their business needs and seeing where we can add value. One area we’d like to develop further is the transport and logistics sector where we can bring our own personal expertise and knowledge of the industry to allow us to make authentic and relevant content.

What excites you most about your industry and business?

We’re really excited about the potential untapped opportunities for us, and because of our extensive TV production experience we bring a ‘broadcast as standard’ level of finish to all the work we undertake. This means clients who work with us can be confident in the knowledge they can expect to receive a quality finished product, every time, that will not only add value to their business, but will also give them a creative and competitive edge.

What do you wish you’d known when starting out?

When we first entered this sector, it was for a one-off piece of work for the BBC in 2010, when they were re-locating part of their operations to MediaCity, Salford, so to be still involved in making content for corporate clients 11 years on is a thrill and a privilege. At the start, having investment to help us get established and grow the business quicker would have been welcome but it’s very rewarding to grow something organically from scratch.

What will be the “next big thing“ in your industry, and how do you plan to handle it?

Technology is always evolving, which in turn makes handling and filming media easier to do. These constant advances allow people to make video within minutes and hours… and sometimes it looks like it! But the great thing about our industry is there’ll always be room for a range of different formats to exist across various platforms. The USP of what we offer is; nothing really beats experience, creative confidence and the knack of making really engaging and entertaining content that lasts.
