London education platform raises £1.45m in largest edtech crowdfunding campaign to date

A London headquartered edtech platform has raised £1.45m via crowdfunding making it the largest edtech crowdfunding campaign to date on Seedrs.

Mindstone, founded in 2020, has built an edtech platform that allows specialists to create engaging courses using pre-existing online articles, podcasts, and videos, helping people learn faster and remember more about a wide range of topics, from astrophysics to zoology.

The crowdfunding will support an increased focus on mobile, as well as further research and development, job creation, and commercial partnerships.

Investors include Mattias Ljungman, who backed Klarna, Viagogo, Peakon, and ClimateCorp as unicorns at their earliest stages, as well as impact investment fund, Mustart Seeze Maze; Eamonn Carey; US VC Scout Fund; Zanichelli Venture; and Andrew Gault.

Joshua Whole, founder and CEO, Mindstone, said: “Online education is broken. Providers and courses too often simply replicate traditional in-person teaching methods in an online environment, and are typically bound to static, one-size-fits-all curricula.

“We are rethinking online education from the ground up to solve this problem. Mindstone is all about democratising access to learning and teaching, so a crowdfunding campaign at this stage made perfect sense.”

Mattias Ljungman, founder and managing partner, Moonfire, said: “I am always on the hunt for the next category-creating disruptor, and when Joshua first described Mindstone to me, I knew I had to invest.”

Eamonn Carey, MD, Techstars, said: “I have a strong belief in Mindstone’s mission and ethos, and that’s why I didn’t have to think twice before putting my own money where my mouth is and backing the company personally.”

Mindstone has also signed a commercial partnership with the Harvard Business Review (HBR) who will be one of the first media companies to work with the business, combining the best of both platforms and allowing their users to learn faster and remember more.
