This week’s round up of North East appointments includes Gateley Smithers Purslow, Elanders UK and Hay & Kilner. Read on to find out more.

(L - R): Mark Campbell, Samuel Read and Jake McGee: Gateley Smithers Purslow

Gateley Smithers Purslow, the multi-disciplinary surveying, engineering and architecture practice arm of legal and professional services group Gateley, has announced an expansion of its Newcastle engineering team with two new appointments.

The Newcastle team is headed up by regional manager Mark Campbell MEng CEng MICE, a highly experienced structural engineer who is chartered and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) and has been with Gateley Smithers Purslow for two years.

Mark commented: “The quality of our work and client support has massively boosted our reputation, which I am pleased to say has led to a significant increase in demand for our services across all sectors and is the reason we have needed to extend our team with these two new appointments and are looking to expand further in 2023.”

The most recent addition to the team is Samuel (Sam) Read, a graduate structural engineer who also studied at Newcastle University, gaining an MEng in civil and structural engineering.

Sam added: “As a graduate structural engineer my job is very varied, but I mainly diagnose structural defects and offer advice and guidance to clients, as well as being involved in residential and commercial structural design work, such as alterations and extensions.”

Jake McGee has been with Gateley Smithers Purslow for 14 months and is also a graduate of Newcastle University with an MEng degree in civil and structural engineering. He said: “Our sphere of activity is one that is always changing and constantly challenging, which makes my role an exciting and rewarding one.”

Jill McCartney, Elanders UK

Elanders UK has announced the appointment of Jill Mccartney as client services manager. Jill, from Cramlington, joins the company with 20 years of experience within the packaging industry.

Jill’s arrival follows the recent appointments of business development managers, Kelly Heath and Chris Homa, as well as a plethora of new starters in recent months across the company’s UK sites, including its North Tyneside headquarters, dedicated swing-tag and fulfilment site in Nottingham and its packaging facility in Bellshill, Scotland.

Jill commented: “This is an exciting time to join Elanders, the company has a vision and plan for growth which is inspiring.

“I have also come full circle as, 20 years ago, I was mentored, at my previous employer, by Gavin Wray, who went on to join Elanders. Ironically, I am now taking over Gavin’s role at Elanders, as he takes on a UK-wide position within the company. Incredibly, all these years later, Gavin is once again training me.

“The progression routes at Elanders really stood out to me. My background is very much in packaging, so I am looking forward to developing my knowledge within the supply chain, working with clients predominantly in lifestyle and fashion and also on the print side to produce educational literature.

Managing director, Kevin Rogers, added: “A warm welcome to Jill who joins us with that perfect blend of enthusiasm and experience. This is going to be a huge year for Elanders as we move forward with our very ambitious plans for growth.”

Kate Garrett and Megan Bradley, Hay & Kilner

Two young graduates have taken their first steps onto the legal career ladder after being chosen by North East law firm Hay & Kilner as its latest trainee solicitors.

Kate Garrett and Megan Bradley have started a two-year training programme which will see them spend four blocks of six months working alongside experienced practitioners in different departments within the firm, in order to give them a sound general grounding in the law and to help identify any particular strengths and areas of interest.

Kate’s first training assignment is within Hay & Kilner’s clinical negligence department, while Megan is now part of its corporate team. Megan studied law at Durham University before taking a Master’s degree in Legal Practice at Northumbria University.

Kate took a Law degree at the University of Liverpool, which included a semester spent studying at a Chinese university as well as time spent in industry, before going on to take a Legal Practice Course qualification at the University of Law in Manchester.

Kate Garrett, who is from Newcastle, commented: “I’d always been interested in the law and felt that the logical processes you go through to develop and deliver your arguments would be something that suited my skills and personality.”

Megan Bradley added: “The complexity and variety that a legal career would offer really appealed to me, and I knew I wanted to work for a full service law firm like Hay & Kilner, so I’d get experience of different parts of the law.”
