Mandarin Oriental signs agreement for future luxury hotel at London's Bankside Yards

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has signed a pre-development hotel management agreement with Samson House Ltd. (SHL), creating the opportunity for a new luxury hotel and branded residences at Bankside Yards on London’s South Bank.

The new Mandarin Oriental Bankside will occupy a standalone 33-storey building within the wider Bankside Yards masterplan, perfectly situated between the Tate Modern art gallery and the Southbank Centre, Europe’s largest centre for the arts.

The property has planning consent, which was obtained in December 2020 by London-based developer Native Land on behalf of SHL. Subject to final non material planning amendments to meet operator requirements, the hotel will feature 171 guestrooms, and 70 branded Residences at Mandarin Oriental.

SHL is owned by an international real estate consortium including Hotel Properties Limited, Native Land Limited and Amcorp Properties Berhad.

Located on the banks of the River Thames, Mandarin Oriental Bankside is part of the wider Bankside Yards development, which is centred around the historic railway arches that run through the heart of the site. The property will benefit from being part of what is planned to be the UK’s first operationally fossil fuel-free major mixed-use development, supporting Mandarin Oriental’s continuous commitment to sustainability.

The agreement envisages a hotel that will offer a diverse range of wellness and fitness options tailored for those leading active lifestyles. Within a dedicated space, guests will find a comprehensive Spa at Mandarin Oriental, providing signature wellness therapies and beauty treatments, a 25m lap pool, a spacious fitness centre and invigorating heat and wet experiences.

The Residences at Mandarin Oriental will offer a refined living experience providing residents with access to Mandarin Oriental’s legendary service offering as well as the hotel facilities. Planned features for residences include a sky lobby lounge, private roof garden and parking.

Alasdair Nicholls, chief executive of Native Land, said: “The Bankside Yards masterplan is creating a best-in-class mixed-use destination, devised by Native Land and its partners in the most central riverside location in London.

“The future addition of a Mandarin Oriental hotel and branded residences will be an important element in the intention to offer the very best amenities side-by-side with world-class cultural institutions, top-tier businesses and a rich and varied community. Such a respected global hospitality brand will positively impact not only the Bankside locality, but also the wider South Bank area.”

James Riley, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, said: “We are excited to announce the development of Mandarin Oriental Bankside, London, which will be a significant addition to the Bankside Yards development and our third Mandarin Oriental property in London.

“We look forward to working with our partners to create a world-class hotel and branded residences that will undoubtedly become a landmark destination in London’s South Bank.”
