North East company wins bid to deliver groundbreaking NHS VR training
A Newcastle based video production company is celebrating after successfully delivering a groundbreaking training video series for the NHS. North East based Media Borne was awarded the contract after beating production firms across the UK to produce a number of interactive virtual reality videos for the NHS Wales.
The six-figure project will save the NHS tens of thousands of pounds year on year as medical staff will no longer need to travel for face to face training sessions. Instead, the virtual reality videos will allow staff from 10 hospitals around Wales, who form the South Wales Trauma Network, to train from their own hospital and at their own pace.
The first round of videos were produced and directed by the Media Borne team and their partners over one week’s intensive filming using real life scenarios. As the main contractors, Media Borne assembled a team of specialist partners to create immersive experiences that can be accessed by one central platform in-order to provide staff with virtual hands-on training.
Managing director Chris Thompson said: “We were delighted to have secured the bid for the contract. It was an exciting and groundbreaking project that we all worked incredibly hard to bring together. These are the first training videos of this kind and we believe that there will be opportunities to produce similar videos for the wider NHS in the future.”
A spokesperson for the South Wales Trauma Network in NHS Wales said: “This is the first time we have used 360 filming to develop an immersive learning environment. I’m not aware of it being used elsewhere within the NHS in our area.
“The 360 virtual reality video allows us to ensure consistency of training across all hospitals in south and west Wales, which are spread over a large geographical area. It also allows for 360 scenarios to be linked to specific clinical skills training and to the policies and guidelines that govern those procedures. There is an ongoing ability to edit the videos so that it remains up to date and ensures the training has longevity.
“A significant amount of money will be saved through travel costs as well as venue hire as well as the need to cover shifts for the clinical staff who are training. This is a huge cost and a real issue throughout the NHS. It is increasingly difficult to provide face to face training and the use of this technology allows detailed learning to take place.”
She added that other trauma networks and the pre-hospital providers are now looking at the Media Borne-produced scenario videos as a way of delivering training to large volumes of staff.
Chris, who launched Media Borne in 2018, added: “We’ve had a fantastic start to 2023 and we hope to work on more cutting edge projects like this NHS one as the year continues. Our aim is to deliver quality video that is highly cost effective for our clients.”
