This week’s North East appointments: Featuring Burnetts Solicitors, Horizon Works and AIS Survivex
This week’s round-up of North East appointments includes Burnetts Solicitors, Horizon Works and AIS Survivex. Read on to find out more…
Callum Bell and Alex Goldthorpe, Burnetts Solicitors
A Newcastle based legal firm has continued its commitment to supporting the next generation of banking solicitors after two former trainees have become part of the team. And now Burnetts have once again opened the doors for a new graduate to join its innovative Banking Solicitor and Recruitment Training Programme.
Callum Bell joined Burnetts in 2021, spending his training contract with the banking team before qualifying as a solicitor in April. He is joined by former Northumbria University graduate, Alex Goldthorpe, who was successful in his application for the training programme and is currently working as a paralegal in the team.
The programme is designed to give top legal graduates the opportunity to be trained within the banking sector and, subject to a successful initial trial as a paralegal within the team, the graduate will receive formal training to qualify as a solicitor. It has however been good news for Alex, who has now been given a training contract with Burnetts.
Alex said: “From day one I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in every aspect of banking law and have been able to work with all different kinds of clients. I feel like I’ve progressed massively in a very short space of time and that’s because of the massive amount of help and support I’ve had from the team. It’s been a fantastic learning experience.”
Callum added: “Banking law was an area I was very keen to progress in. Quick progression was made possible because of the calibre of the other members of the banking team and the support I’ve had every step of the way.”
Nicola Nutley, partner and head of banking at Burnetts, concluded: “Callum has become my right-hand man, which is unusual for someone junior but just shows his ability. And we knew straight away that Alex was a fantastic fit for us.”
Paul Smyth, Horizon Works

Paul Smyth will be leading the company’s visual media services, which are in increasing demand from businesses across sectors including manufacturing, engineering and renewables.

Samantha Vassallo, managing director of Horizon Works, commented: “We are delighted to have Paul on board and look forward to delivering more exciting visual media projects for our clients.”
Paul added: “I’ve greatly enjoyed supporting the Horizon Works team in the past and it’s very exciting to be strengthening that relationship by leading on Horizon Works’ visual media services.”
Adam Armstrong, AIS Survivex
Industrial training provider AIS Survivex has appointed a new business development manager to support key clients and companies across Tees Valley. Adam Armstrong from Hartlepool will be based at the company’s newly launched Middlesbrough training centre and will be responsible for supporting clients across Tees Valley with all their training needs.
As well as helping existing clients, Adam will be promoting an extensive portfolio of wind, oil and gas, construction, processing, and industrial courses to Tees Valley businesses and those further afield to address skills shortages and help the region develop a highly skilled, safe, and competent workforce now and into the future.
Prior to Saudi Aramco, Adam was business consultant for the UK’s largest health & wellness awarding body, Active IQ, where he was responsible for expanding the company’s training scope into overseas territories such as the Middle East, Europe, and the Far-East.
Adam’s first priority will be to establish strong links with local employers to help identify skills and training needs and provide tailored, cost-effective, and high-quality solutions.
Adam commented: “Joining AIS Survivex really excites me. The company has a unique, highly innovative approach to business and works very closely with clients to truly understand their needs. Tees Valley is buzzing with new investment, new projects, and new industries such as wind and carbon capture.
“We’re here to support the region as it grows and to help develop a highly skilled, competent local workforce. I’m really looking forward to talking to regional businesses to find out how we can help them address their skills and training challenges.”
