Partnership comes together to bring Sheffield historic listed building back to its former glory

One of the region’s leading building surveyors, Fourth Wall Building Consultancy, is supporting youth development charity Endeavour in transforming its home on Earl Marshal Road in the Burngreave area of the city.

The building, which was previously a school, received its Grade II listed status in 1995 and is built in the Gothic Revival style, one of the oldest in the area, having been constructed between 1874 and 1875.

Fourth Wall has been instructed by Endeavour to deliver the project, which is not only significant to the organisation and the young people it supports but also to the city, as an important heritage asset and a great example of Victorian public municipal architecture, which was one of the first to be built following the 1870 Education Act.

Construction on the building began in September 2023, with completion scheduled for the first quarter of 2024 and a view to being fully occupied in the second quarter.

The scheme aims to improve the building’s carbon footprint, accessibility provision for disabled users, the facilities available to students, staff, and the wider community, and ensure the long-term viability of the site as a place for education and youth provision.

The building will become a sustainable asset to Endeavour, which works to enrich the lives of local young people through education and adventure activities. Their work includes delivering educational opportunities and GCSE qualifications, outdoor activities, and personal development, and helping young people overcome personal challenges daily.

The £1.2m project works are being funded by the Youth Improvement Fund grant programme which comprises over £300m of capital and revenue grants, funded by the UK Government. The scheme is one of a small number of major capital projects awarded funding in Sheffield.
