99% of UK businesses are SMEs
There were 59,000 more businesses in 2005 compared with 2004, reveals new statistics on Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) published by the Government’s Small Business Service.
In 2005 there were 4.3 million business enterprises, of which 99.3% employed between 0 and 49 employees. Only 27,000 (0.6 per cent) were medium-sized (50 to 249 employees) and 6,000 (0.1 per cent) were large (250 or more employees). Self-employed people with no employees had an estimated combined turnover of £190 billion. Enterprises with employees had an estimated combined turnover of £2,250 billion.
