£2.5m Road Repairs Scheme Gets Underway

Work on a £2.5m road scheme which has been developed in consultation with residents gets underway in Darlington this week. The Let’s Get Cracking project has seen residents have their say on areas they would like to see targeted for extra maintenance. Almost 1,000 people completed questionnaires from the Council, highlighting problems in 1,428 locations. Common worries raised in the questionnaires included flooding, broken or cracked pavements, uneven roads, potholes and grass verges in a poor state of repair.After studying the replies and assessing the top priorities, the Council is now starting work on the first phase of repairs. The very first schemes to start include footpath improvements in Smithfield Road and Coniscliffe Road, as well as upgrading the verges in Parkside.The £2.5m investment is over and above original plans to spend £2m on highways maintenance over the coming year. Nick Wallis, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “The start of work on the Let’s Get Cracking project is excellent news. “Hundreds of residents told us which areas they wanted to see improved and we want to thank everyone for taking the time to do so. “I am looking forward to the work beginning and seeing the positive impact it will have on the numerous areas that are included in the first stage of the scheme.”
