2p coins worth 3p

Some of Britain’s 2p coins are now actually worth 3p as a result of the soaring price of copper. Ananova.com reports that 2p coins made before 1992 contain 97% copper, which has hit an all-time record price of £2,900 a tonne. So a tonne of 2ps - 145,000 coins - would be worth £1,500 more as scrap than at the bank. But don’t go carting off your spare coppers to the scrap yard just yet - since 1992, 1p and 2p coins have been made of steel with just a thin copper plating.
