8th biggest US university keen to link with North East

Delegates from one of the USA’s biggest universities are visiting the North East this week to discuss linking with the region’s business.With 45,000 students, the University of Central Florida is the eighth biggest university in the US, and has a research budget of $100m. Seventeen of the most influential figures from the university are spending three days in the North East to learn of the region’s expertise in fields such as health sciences, new and renewable energy and its award-winning cultural agenda. The team is also keen to learn of the success of Newcastle University’s Medical School, having just been granted permission to build a new medical school at its Orlando-based campus. Included on the three-day tour will be visits to Sedgefield’s NETPark Science Park, The Sage Gateshead and Durham University.The tour is organised by One NorthEast’s Investment and Aftercare team. David Allison, One NorthEast Director of Business and Industry, said: “The University of Central Florida is a potentially hugely important partner for North East England, generating more than $2.6bn for the central Floridian regional economy. “Academics and leading businesspeople in Florida recognise real areas of synergy with the North East and our regional tour will present them with the opportunity to learn of our work at close quarters which we hope will lead to business opportunities and partnerships. “The North East has strong links with the States, playing home to nearly 200 US companies, and we have a strong presence there in our joint role in the North of England Inward Investment Agency (NoE) whose offices help sell our region directly to targeted investors.”
