Adventurer Sought For South Pole Trek
There are just a few days left to enter a competition to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the South Pole.
The North East Really Delivers (nerd) campaign, delivered by cultural change programme Aspire, is on the look-out for a young adventurer aged between 18-30 to take part in an international trek to the coldest place on Earth. The winner will travel to the Antarctic as part of a three-week expedition led by Robert Swan, the North East’s internationally renowned Polar explorer. Robert, who is returning to live in the region following a long absence, has been so impressed by Aspire’s programme – which aims to create a culture-change amongst young people in the North East – that he has persuaded its executive director Deborah Carrington to accompany him on the expedition in February 2006.
A focal point of the trip will be the opening of the first education base in Antarctica – from what they learn there, members of the expedition team will have the opportunity to feed into curriculum material covering Citizenship, Environment, Renewable energy, Geography and History on their return. This will be the precursor to a much bigger trip in 2007, when - in conjunction with Aspire - Robert intends to take a number of young people from the region to the Antarctic.
The closing date is 20th January 2006. For more details or to enter the competition, log onto the nerd-world website at http://www.nerd-world.co.uk/Default.aspx?tabid=222.
