Anti-bullying music competition is launched

A competition has been launched to encourage young people in the region to sing out against bullying. The North East Anti-Bullying Song Competition has returned for a second year and is encouraging budding musicians to enter. Songs can be ballads, rap, pop or any style that best represents how young people feel about bullying. Last year, over 100 young musicians performed in the competition which is to become an annual event. Entrants must be aged between 11 and 18 on September 1, 2006. Individuals, or groups or no more than 10, can enter. Songs will be selected by a panel of judges and the final 12 songs will be performed at The Sage, Gateshead, on Monday, November 20 to mark the start of National Anti-Bullying Week. Val McFarlane, the North East Regional Anti-Bullying Co-ordinator, said: “Bullying is a problem for many young people in every region. “This competition raises awareness about the issue, and enables young people to put into words and music how they feel about it.” The closing date for entry forms is May 26 and recordings should be submitted in July.
