Award honours for Quadrus Building

The extraordinary Quadrus Centre in Boldon took centre stage at South Tyneside’s Good Design Awards when it was crowned the Borough’s best building.The iconic £5million development, which takes the form of two cedar-clad cubes housing managed office space, was named as the overall winner and best new building during a ceremony at Bede’s World, in Jarrow. The independent panel of six assessors described the imposing Centre as a “striking landmark” that “offers a bold and imaginative statement at one of the key gateways to the Borough”. They also praised its “exceptional level of architectural ambition” and “high quality working environment”.Other winners on the night were the Harton Downhill Local Nature Reserve Sculpture Project, which won the public places/community category, and extensions to the historic Yellow Leas Farmhouse in Front Street, East Boldon, which won the award for the best building conversion/restoration.Judges at the event (which included representatives from the Shields Gazette, Northern Architecture, South Tyneside Council and One NorthEast) commented: “This striking landmark building offers a bold and imaginative statement at one of the key gateways into the Borough. The project demonstrates how a new building can make a challenging design statement and contribute to the landscape character of the wider area. The Quadrus Centre demonstrates an exceptional level of architectural ambition, providing a high quality working environment for occupiers of the building.“The Quadrus Centre is a managed office development run by TEDCO (the Tyneside Economic Development Company).
