Blooming huge boat

South Tyneside have upped the stakes in the Northumbria in Bloom contest by cultivating an enormous green galleon on a busy borough roundabout. The latest addition to the area’s horticultural creations sits tall on the New Crown island on South Shields seafront. The galleon and other such displays, including dolphins in Whitburn, and sunflowers in Boldon, combine to boost South Tyneside’s bid to win the prestigious plant contest. Councillor Michael Clare, Lead Member Environment, Housing and Transport, said: “It’s no secret that we harbour ambitions to win this year’s competition outright. We have done all we can to impress the judges, but there are obvious benefits to the local community. Impressive floral displays like this bring cheer to people and instil in them a sense of local pride.”
