Businesspeople Swap Their Desks For The Classroom

One in five teachers gave up a management or senior role in business to teach, according to research by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). Secondary school maths teaching is proving particularly popular with thirty eight per cent of new maths teachers surrendering a management role to teach. Of those who made the switch, 79 per cent said they wanted to make a difference to people’s lives. Seventy eight per cent said they were keen to work with young people, and 75 per cent said they were ready for a new challenge.

Graham Holley, Executive Director at the TDA said: “Our schools thrive on great leadership, and it is gratifying to see that the future leaders of our schools will be of such high calibre. Career switchers bring with them a huge range of highly relevant skills. High achievers can reach headteacher status or take on an enhanced classroom role very quickly due to the excellent progression routes in teaching and attractive salaries. But most importantly, teaching offers the opportunity to work with young people and help to shape their futures.” ‘Train to teach’ events are taking place in Leeds and London to provide information about becoming a teacher.
