Cash boost for climate change groups

Three North East projects aimed at shifting people’s attitudes towards tackling climate change are to share more than £146,000 in funding. The three regional projects are among 53 across England that will receive funding from Defra totalling £4.6m over the next two years.Sunderland City Council will receive £35,500 for a campaign using balloons that will help the public visualise the emissions that cause climate change. Langdon Beck YHA, at Forest-in-Teesdale, near Barnard Castle, has been awarded £18,300 for its project “Tourism North East (TNE) - Changing the Climate”. This will provide a series of 10 one-day residential seminars for tourism industry professionals at the hostel, the YHA’s leading “Green Beacon” Youth Hostel. Helix Arts in Newcastle has been awarded £92,872 to support “Climate Change Explorer,” a region-wide initiative that will target hard to reach young people through 200 schools and 750 youth leaders across the North of England. The project will involve 21,000 young people in creating work on climate change including making a film about climate change. Environment Secretary David Miliband said: “Climate change affects all of us and I believe that today’s successful projects will reach new audiences and communities at national, regional and local level and shift people’s opinions in favour of action to tackle climate change. “Government is playing its part and giving the lead in tackling climate change. But we will not succeed without the support and active participation of all sectors of society.”
