Disappointment for Tyneside ship building

A Tyneside ship building yard has lost a Ministry of Defence contract. Swan Hunter has completed only one of the two ships commissioned, and the remaining work will be transferred to BAE Systems in Scotland.Alan Clarke, One NorthEast Chief Executive commented: “One NorthEast is very disappointed that Swan Hunter is losing the opportunity to complete the Lyme Bay. “Clearly, this has been a commercial decision between Swan Hunter and the Ministry of Defence. “We will continue to work with Swan Hunter to assist them in finding other work which could continue employment in the yard and we are seeking a further meeting to discuss its plans. “The yard recently won a licence from the Environment Agency to decommission ships which presents them with new opportunities for the future.”
