Dynamic Dogs

Most dogs walk, run, climb and scramble, so why the fascination with (imaginatively named) BigDog? Perhaps because most dogs aren’t powered by gasoline engines that drive hydraulic actuation systems. BigDog, described by its designers Boston Dynamics as “the most advanced quadruped robot on earth”, is the size of a small mule and has an onboard computer control system. The robot, however, is not the only machine-mammal from the Boston Dynamics team, who have also developed LittleDog – designed to aid research on locomotion, and other insect-like robots who can climb all sorts of surfaces, or scramble over rough terrain.
