Ethnic minorities to be informed on police powers

A campaign has been launched to inform young people in black and ethnic minorities about their rights if the police stop and search them. The Home Office ‘Stop and Search - Know Your Rights Pass It On’ campaign explains what the police are legally allowed to do, aims to inform young people of their rights, and explains how they can complain if they feel they have been mistreated. John Roberts, Metropolitan Police Authority said: “It is in everyone’s interests - police and public alike - to be clear about what happens when a police officer stops a person in the street. “Stop and search can be a very valuable police tool to help detect and prevent crime and to keep everybody safe. But it is important to ensure that it is carried out in a professional and respectful manner, in order for it to have positive impact on all our communities.”
