Europe's largest traveling fair rolls into town
The largest traveling fair in Europe makes its annual trip to Tyneside today. A tradition dating back to the 1700’s, the Hoppings will take up its position on Newcastle’s Town Moor until Saturday 1st July. The event will open with children from local schools treated to free rides by organisers, the Showman’s Guild of Great Britain. Originally developed out of the Temperance Festival which was held on the Town Moor, the Hoppings can be traced back to 1721 when horse racing took place on the town moor. The Hoppings will run for nine days, closing at 11.30pm on weekdays, 11.45pm on Saturdays and 10pm on Sunday. On weekdays the main attractions will not open until late afternoon but bingo, food stalls and children’s rides will be open from 2pm. Revellers can enjoy over 60 rides and around 120 side shows and stalls and this year’s attractions will include the Bomber Mk 2 which will receive its premier in Newcastle, as well as the usual family favourites including the dodgems and carousel.
