First Stage of Darlington Pedestrian Scheme Is Unveiled
The first stage of a pedestrianisation scheme in Darlington town centre will be unveiled this week. The Pedestrian Heart project aims to make the centre of Darlington a more attractive place to visit and shop by creating a pedestrianised area. The first area in the scheme to be completed, a section of paving along Blackwellgate, outside Goldsmiths the jewellers, will be uncovered this week. This will be the first time people will see the results of the pedestrianisation work and get an impression of the finished scheme.
David Lyonette, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration said: “The Pedestrian Heart scheme is progressing well and I am sure people will be interested to see this first piece of finished work. “Of course there is a lot more to do and I would urge members of the public and businesses to be patient with us while the work continues. “The benefits of the Pedestrian Heart scheme to the local economy will be great and it will also make the town centre a much more attractive place for residents and visitors. All shops and businesses remain open and whilst work is progressing we would urge people to continue visiting and shopping in the town, supporting local retailers.”
