Funding boost for North East games sector

The games industry in the North East is celebrating following news that Codeworks GameHorizon has secured a further two years’ funding from One NorthEast. The collaborative business network has helped generate £2.2 million of new business leads within its first 18 months, resulting in a 30% growth in the sector. The funding announcement means that Codeworks GameHorizon will be able to continue to support the sector – this includes organising national and international events and running a Games Placement Scheme which has seen it place 30 students in 15 games companies in the last 12 months – a 60% increase in games industry placements. A mark of the network’s success comes in the fact that it has secured 100% membership amongst the region’s gaming community – 22 companies in all. Darren Falcus, Director of Atomic Planet, a video games studio in Middlesbrough, said: “It is important for us that we have an organisation working for us that understands the industry. GameHorizon represents the region on a national and international level, supporting companies in international trade and making valuable contacts/international networks.”
