Home-grown green fuel could cut carbon emissions
Bio-diesel made from crops grown and processed in the region can reduce carbon emissions by up to 94% compared with fossil fuels, according to a new study.A survey into the environmental impact of a complete bio-diesel supply chain in the region has been carried out by not-for-profit company Northeast Biofuels – a consortium of petrochemical businesses, farmers, agricultural suppliers and regional development agency, One NorthEast.The research measured the carbon dioxide and other green house gas emissions for all stages of the bio-diesel supply chain. Accounting for tractor use in preparing the field, as well as the energy needed to move intermediary products between processing locations, the survey showed a 94% reduction in the levels of carbon emitted. One NorthEast Board member Ian Brown said: “The North East is gaining a reputation as a leader in the development of renewable fuels. This information shows the importance of the work we’re doing in promoting a supply chain in the region that starts from the seed and ends in the consumer’s tank.
