Labs keep North East at forefront of medical research

The North East is continuing its plans to becoming a world-beating region for science with the opening of a new suite of medical research labs. The labs will be used by researchers studying genetic instability, as well as the key cause of cancer and other diseases of old age. They will also be house teams of stem cell researchers. One NorthEast Chairman Margaret Fay will officially open the new sets of labs at Life Knowledge Park (LKP) at the Institute of Human Genetics, International Centre for Life on June 7.The new labs are the result of result of £6.3m of investment from One NorthEast in LKP - one of six genetics knowledge parks in the UK chosen by the Department of Health and the Department of Trade & Industry in 2002.One NorthEast’s Healthcare Pillar Manager, Dr. Caroline Gladwell, said: “As a result of the Life Knowledge Park, we now have the facilities in North East England to create real opportunities in the area of genomic instability, including business spin-out opportunities in genetics diagnostics and testing. The resident scientists need to maximise these opportunities and continue to build the region’s reputation as a leader in this field.”
