Lottery Cash Gives North East A Sporting Chance

Nearly 90 voluntary and community projects across the North East are sharing in more than £369,000 this month, through the Lottery’s Awards for All grants programme.

A range of groups and associations including sporting clubs such as football, canoeing, cycling, bowling, cricket, rugby, wheelchair tennis, swimming and boxing are among the local organisations that will benefit from the latest grants.

Among the projects receiving funds today from Awards for All is Coquet Canoe Club in Alnwick. It will use a grant of £4,962 to promote kayaking and canoeing at all levels for adults and young people. The award will pay for 10 new kayaks which will cater for different disciplines. Club coaches will also receive training for the different boats. Cycling Opportunities for All in Blyth Valley will spend £5,000 promoting the sport of cycling by people with disabilities.

The award will be used to purchase an additional specialised bike, safety equipment and advertising of the group. James Turner, Big Lottery Fund Head of the North East region, said on behalf of the Awards for All funders: “Today’s announcement will mean so much to so many people in the North East.
