Luck levels low on Teesside

Just 51% of residents in Middlesbrough feel lucky, according to a new survey by the National Lottery. Newcastle residents have a more positive outlook with 60% feeling lucky. Brighton, meanwhile, topped the poll with 93% of residents asked describing themselves as lucky, followed by Liverpool in second place with 87%.In Newcastle men feel luckier than women, with 74 per cent of men considering themselves fortunate compared to 63 per cent of women. In Middlesbrough, this trend is repeated with 73 per cent of men feeling lucky, compared to 61 per cent of women.The National Lottery Luck Study explored people’s overall outlook on life, their general mood and optimism, satisfaction with life and how this impacts on their attitude to luck. Psychologist and author, Dr Linda Papodopoulos, who led the research on behalf of The National Lottery, said: “We are not surprised by the findings for Newcastle, as there is a lot of regeneration taking place – this leads to strong feelings of luck and hope for the future. I think it’s fair to say that anyone going to Newcastle now, after a break of 10 years or so, couldn’t help but be struck by the enormous changes that have taken place in the city.“Dr Linda continued: “Life satisfaction can have a major influence on how lucky people feel – although Middlesbrough seems to differ to other parts of the UK, as only half of residents feel lucky, despite high scores on satisfaction. It’s great to see that so many people are hopeful for the future, however, as this will give a great deal of energy to the area for years to come.“The study was conducted by ICM Research (FieldWork UK) among 1,550 adults in 31 UK towns and cities.
