Metro boss to stand down

The Director General of transport operator Nexus is to stand down in August. As Nexus chief, Mike Parker has been in charge of the Tyne and Wear metro system for 12 years. During that time, some of the changes he has overseen include the extension of Metro to Sunderland, and the construction of Park Lane Interchange, the busiest UK transport interchange outside London.The move in August will see Mr Parker take up a position in a small private company in the region. He will also continue his role as non-executive Chairman of Northumberland Tourism, a post to which he received his appointment in March this year. Announcing his decision to leave, Mr Parker said: “It has been a very difficult decision for me to make. I have enjoyed my time at Nexus. We have a great team here and I believe we have done an enormous amount to improve the quality of public transport in Tyne and Wear over the last 12 years. “However, after over 35 years in public transport, and the public sector, it is time to move on and try something different.”
