New cycle route opened

The last stretch of the Walney to Wear cycling route in Cumbria has been completed, meaning cyclists will no longer have to jostle for road space with motorists on the A590 trunk road.The Highways Agency has invested £210,000 in the route between Gilpin Bridge and the Stakes Moss junction. The opening of the cycle path signals the completion of the Cumbrian section of the cycle route, which connects Walney and Sunderland.Highways Agency assistant route performance manager Asrar Hussain said: “This section of the Walney to Wear cycle route was one of the few remaining where cyclists had to share road space on a busy section of the trunk road. “Now that it is completed, cyclists and pedestrian have a safe dedicated route along the trunk road corridor without conflict with high speed traffic.“Previously, cyclists had to cross the A590 twice or use a farm underpass. The Walney to Wear route forms part of the National Cycling Network.
