North East Chinese New Year Celebrations
Celebrations will be taking place across the North East on Sunday (29th January) to celebrate Chinese New Year. A colourful array of cultural activities will welcome the Year of the Dog. People born in the Year of the Dog are said to possess the best traits of human nature, including a deep sense of loyalty and honesty. Dog people, according to the Chinese Horoscope, also make good leaders. Famous people born in the Year of the Dog include Sir Winston Churchill, Elvis Presley, Madonna and Sylvester Stallone. Dragon, Lion and Unicorn dances and traditional Chinese firecrackers will launch the festivities at 12 noon at the site of the Ceremonial Arch in Newcastle’s Chinatown. The Lion & Unicorn will then dance through Chinatown alongside loads of celebratory events organised by The Chinese Festivity Group.
Festivity Group Chairman Edmund Ng said: “Chinese New Year is the most important festival for Chinese people all over the world, as we celebrate new beginnings and hope. On 29th January Chinatown will be buzzing with excitement and colour that only Chinese New Year can bring. Each year we seem to attract bigger crowds; we look forward to welcoming families to join in the celebrations.”
