North East's best green spaces revealed
21 parks and green spaces across the region have received Green Flag classification. The national benchmark – the equivalent of Blue Flag awards for beaches – is awarded to the country’s most welcoming, safe and well-maintained green spaces. The awards were made for parks and green spaces in Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Stockton, Derwentside, Sunderland, Tynedale, Chester-le-Street, Saltburn, Gateshead, North Tyneside and County Durham. A record 423 Green Flag Awards have been made across the country. Many of these Green Flags will be hoisted during a week-long celebration of these fantastic green spaces, encouraging people to ‘Take to Your Local Park’ from Saturday July 29 to Sunday 6 August.
