Saddle up for new Hadrian's cycleway

Hundreds of cyclists from across the UK are heading for South Tyneside next weekend to celebrate the opening of an epic bike trail. The 120-mile coast-to-coast section of the Hadrian’s Cycleway runs from Silloth in Cumbria to South Shields, and has been developed by the transport charity Sustrans.The route follows the line of the Roman frontier across Northumberland National Park to the coast, where it splits to head south to Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum at South Shields, and along the river to Tynemouth. Cyclists from all over the country will be setting off from Silloth on Wednesday, 19th July, and arriving in South Shields on Saturday, 22nd July - via the Shields Ferry - to be met at Arbeia by Councillor Jim Sewell, Lead Member for Culture and Wellbeing, and Councillor Michael Clare, Lead Member for Environment, Housing and Transport. South Tyneside cyclists who want to join in with the last leg of the ride are invited to set off from the Guildhall on Newcastle’s Quayside where the group will be resting from 11.15am to 12.15pm, before crossing the Millennium Bridge at 12.30pm.
