Schools Get New Guidelines For Tackling Drug-Related Incidents

Schools across Tyneside have been issued with new guidelines for dealing with drug and alcohol-related incidents.

The protocol, developed by Northumbria Police in conjunction with Newcastle City Council, sets out a standard course of action for schools to follow in response to drug or alcohol related incidents.

The new guidance, called ‘A Positive Approach to Drugs and Schools’, includes details of how pupils affected by drugs can access treatment and support. Letters are to be sent out to parents to let them know that the new protocol is now in place. DC Steve Davison, Drug Liaison Officer for Newcastle Area Command, said: “Thankfully cases involving drugs in schools are rare but it is important schools follow the same course of action if they are dealing with an incident. “It is vital that the same procedure is followed in order for the school, with the support of the police, to take whatever action is appropriate. “We will also be writing to parents to tell them about the work going on and encouraging them to get in touch if they have any issues or concerns.”
