Science-positive fair

Making model aircraft, testing electrical circuits and uncovering the truth about the science in cartoons are among the activities taking place at the North East’s largest science fair. The 16th annual Science is Great event will be held at the University of Teesside from June 13 to 23. The hands-on event is aimed at school pupils aged 7 – 14 and gives them the chance to see science close up through a number of workshops and demonstrations.Among this year’s highlights is The Cartoon Science Show where well-known animated characters help children explore the differences between the science shown in cartoons and that of real life. Older children will enjoy the ‘Music to Your Ears’ show which looks at all aspects of sound from soundwaves to the latest MP3 technology.Sarah McLusky, Education Operations Manager at SETPOINT which organised the event, said: “Science is Great is a hugely popular event. We have over 4000 young people attending, some traveling from as far away as Cramlington.
