Should volunteers be paid for their work?

With Volunteers Week now underway, a joint-action network of County Durham’s voluntary & community organisations has launched an online poll asking people’s views on volunteering. One Voice Network is looking particularly at the question whether incentives should be used to stimulate community spirit. For example, young people with a ‘Connexionscard’ can collect points for certain voluntary activities, such as those organised through the Millennium Volunteers scheme. These points entitle the young people to cash vouchers for products in entertainment, style, magazines and books, music, online shopping, sports, stationery, phones and games, and travel.
