Spoof Ad Highlights Arms Trade
Shopping channels: viewed by some as the saviour of unnecessary and often overpriced tat for you home, and now also the platform for a new campaign from Amnesty International to raise awareness of the international arms trade. The human rights charity has created a very slick advert showing two bubbly presenters in a homely studio selling AK 47 rifles. However, underneath the chatty patter which sees the presenters’ demonstrating the gun’s features, lies a much more serious - and sobering - message: how readily available these dangerous weapons actually are. There are around 639 million small arms and light weapons in the world today. Without strict control, such weapons will continue to fuel violent conflict, state repression, crime, and domestic abuse.
