TV Licence Up £5 in 2006/07

The cost of a colour TV licence will rise by £5 to £131.50, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tessa Jowell announced yesterday. The rate of increase, effective from 1 April 2006, is set according to the formula announced by the Government in February 2000, following a report on the future funding of the BBC by an independent review panel. Despite the increase, the Corporation has been told that it must raise over £1billion through efficiency savings and increased income over the same period to ensure that it is able to provide a schedule of “high quality programmes” and “remain at the forefront of broadcasting technology.”
