Young people win dream work experience placements

Six young people from across England have won internships with top chiefs, sports clubs and magazines, thanks to the Learning and Skills Council. The LSC has teamed up with Charlton Athletic Football Club, Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club, Trevor Sorbie, Sportsbeat, Sugar Magazine and Gordon Ramsay to give young people the chance to experience working with top professionals.The internship competition was launched in response to recent research which revealed that by 2010, 51 per cent of school leavers without at least five GCSEs will be unemployed.Melanie Hunt, Director of Learning at the LSC, said: “Work experience is a valuable addition to any CV and a competition like this opens up the wide range of options available to young people when they finish compulsory education. However, what must be remembered is that to succeed in each one of the careers featured in these placements you will need the minimum set of qualifications to make your mark. “Whatever happens, don’t find yourself under-qualified for your dream job.“Philip Howarth from Leeds will be spending a week with the Newcastle Falcons rugby team, joining their community coaching scheme. This will involve visiting local schools and coaching rugby skills with a community development coach, which would be invaluable experience for anybody wishing to work in sports science or teaching.
