Kids dependent on mobile phones

More than nine of out ten 12 year olds now own a mobile phone, and more young children than ever are reliant on mobile technology.

The survey reports that 51% of ten-year-olds now own a mobile phone, rising to 91% for 12-year-olds.

The Mobile Life Youth Report commissioned by Carphone Warehouse, is one of the biggest ever social studies to examine how mobile phones have changed the way young people live. Over 1,250 young people aged 11 to 17 who own mobile phones were surveyed.

Charles Dunstone, chief executive of The Carphone Warehouse Group said: “The mobile phone has become the most important electronic device for young people in the UK today. “It provides them with a social network, a sense of security and access to entertainment. But most importantly it provides them with a sense of belonging to their peer group.”

The report revealed divided opinions among adults. Only a third of adults feel children should have a mobile phone before the age of 11, but more than half (54%) of parents think it is ok for an 11-year-old to have a mobile phone.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Pat Spungin said: “Some people think mobile phones are like earrings and are unnecessary and inappropriate for people below a certain age. “However most parents disagree as the mobile phone offers new ways for young people to connect that many adults wish they had enjoyed as teenagers.”
