Blaydon Races bus service launched

Exactly 90 years to the month after the last bus left Balmbras bound for the Blaydon Races, a new bus service is up and running along the famous route. Bus operator Go North East has introduced a new Blaydon Racers service from Newcastle to Blaydon that travels along the Scotswood Road.

The new service revives memories of the horse race meeting immortalised in Geordie Ridley’s anthemic song of the same name, which was last held in September 1916. In tribute to the Blaydon Races, buses operating on the route are decorated with images and themes from the song.

Martin Harris, commercial director at Go North East, said: “The Blaydon Races is part of Tyneside folklore, famous the world over, and we hope that the new service will prove a hit with bus passengers. “The bus livery feature scenes from the song and I’m sure that, as well as enjoying a rapid and punctual service, it is something our passengers will enjoy.”
