100% attendance students to see ice stars

Pupils in Newcastle are being given the chance to see some of the country’s fastest sports stars in action.Newcastle City Council’s Education Welfare Service has teamed up with the Mobilx Vipers ice hockey team as part of a scheme to improve school attendance and punctuality.

Pupils in participating schools who achieve 100% attendance during a set four-week period could receive complimentary tickets to see the Vipers, who play at the Metro Radio Arena.

Gillian Sanders, Attendance Initiatives Development Officer at Newcastle City Council, said: “Regular attendance has a positive impact on levels of attainment and gives pupils a better start in life. “Schemes like this one with the Vipers are a great way of encouraging pupils to get into good habits of attendance and punctuality, which will stay with them throughout their time at school and into employment.

“We couldn’t do this without the support of the Vipers and we thank the team for their commitment to promoting the importance of education.“Posters featuring scenes from Vipers’ games with messages about school attendance will be on display in schools across the city as part of the initiative. Vipers players will be visiting some Newcastle schools for special assemblies, where they will talk about the importance of attendance and about health and fitness.
