24-hour buses to run between Newcastle and Chester-le-Street

Go North East is to break new ground by becoming the first operator in the North of England to operate a 24-hour bus service.

The leading bus operator in the North East will pilot the scheme on its popular 21 service between Newcastle and Chester-le-Street, which calls at Gateshead, Low Fell and Birtley. The new service will start operations on Sunday/Monday 1st/2nd October and provide high frequency services before dropping to an hourly service between midnight and 0500.

Go North East commercial director Martin Harris said: “This is a first for bus services in the North of England. We are increasingly living and working in a 24-hour society and all the feedback we get from our passengers indicates there is a demand for services like this. “They tell us they have problems with transport during the night, with taxis hard to find and expensive. This will provide a reliable, value for money, easy to use service as a real alternative for those who are out an about or have to work through the night. “We will operate the service for a trial period initially with plans to develop the service further in future if successful.”
