Waste experts to sift through household bins
A waste specialist is to analyse household bins in County Durham to find out exactly what people throw away. Starting next month (October), environmental consultancy Resource Futures Ltd will collect, sort through and analyse doorstep collections from a sample of 700 households across the county. The team will also look at material left at the county’s household waste recycling centres.
Councillor Brian Myers, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for waste management, said: “The research will provide a better understanding of the types and quantities of materials that people throw away and of the seasonal influences on the household waste stream. “Different areas don’t necessarily produce the same kind of waste - some might produce more cardboard while others might produce more drinks cartons. “By looking at exactly what people throw out over the seasons, we can tailor-make a service to meet the needs of the individual district rather than having a one-size-fits-all service for everyone.”
