£1m bridge boost for cycle route

A new £1m bridge which will carry one of the country’s most popular long distance cycle routes over a busy road in County Durham is due to be formally opened today. The 60-metre long single span steel arched structure carries the Sustrans C2C Cycle Route over the A6076 road at Shield Row in Stanley. It is built as replacement to the former railway bridge, demolished last year.

As well as carrying the C2C Cycle Route between Workington and Whitehaven in the west and Sunderland in the east, the bridge will also be used by pedestrians using the former railway path which once carried trains into Consett.

David Gray, Sustrans’ C2C manager, said the bridge was a “powerful statement”. He added: “We are tremendously grateful to the developers for the key role they have played in its provision. “The bridge is physical evidence of continuing support from the County Council, with whom we have been working in partnership for more than 20 years.”
