New ?peephole? cinema for Tyneside

A new way of watching films will be coming to Newcastle this month. People passing by The Little Jewel on Newcastle’s High Bridge Street will be invited to peep through a hole in the window to watch films, documentaries, music videos and animation, shown between 10am and 10pm.

The ‘peephole’ cinema, which will be located in a former shop front window, will show different films every week. The films form part of the Waygood Gallery’s film programme, which will undergo a multi-million pound renovation this winter.

A converted 1970’s caravan, parked across the road from The Little Jewel Cinema, will also be used as a mobile cinema. The Mobile Cinema will be on High Bridge Street at 6-8pm on Thursday 19th October, 11am-4pm on Saturday 21st October, 11am-5pm on Saturday 25th November & 11am-5pm on Saturday 17th December.

Helen Smith, Director of Waygood, said, “This is a really exciting opportunity for us. The Little Jewel aims to attract lots of different people, from those with an interest in art, to just curious passers-by. It will be a unique and enjoyable way of viewing a range of films and work. The first season is the Diamond season running between October 06 and January 07 and we hope that people will come along to have a look and then keep coming back each week to see what’s new.”

The first film to be screened at Waygood’s Little Jewel Cinema from Friday 20 October 2006 - Wednesday 25th October 2006 will be Fergus Walking (1977) by William Raban, who has also been commissioned to create a film archiving the refurbishment and reconstruction of Waygood Gallery. The film, known as Waygood Walking, will be filmed in reverse, with Raban employing an innovative cutting strategy so the viewer sees every shot in normal forwards direction. The same technique has also been used for Fergus Walking.
