Two North East universities among world's top 200

Two North East universities have been named amongst the world’s top universities in the Times Higher Education Supplement. Durham and Newcastle Universities achieved 132nd place and 133rd place respectively in the World University Rankings, a league table of the world’s best 200 universities, selected from the thousands worldwide.

The table is led by Harvard (USA), with Cambridge second and Oxford third. Durham is 132nd equal, one place above Newcastle.

A spokesman for Newcastle University said: “The fact that the North East has two Universities ranked in the world’s top 200 is very good news for the region. It shows why we are able to attract students from all over the UK and indeed the world.

’The North East needs the high-calibre graduates and cutting-edge research provided by top universities to boost its economy and create quality jobs. That is why we are involved in Science City and other initiatives, aimed at attracting top companies to the region.

“To compile the survey, the newspaper asked academics and leading companies around the world to list the universities they considered to be the best. Additional marks were allocated to each university according to teaching and research quality.
