Birthday cards banned

A company has banned staff birthday cards in case they breach new age discrimination laws.

Insurer Alan & Thomas has circulated cards for its 36 staff to sign for many years. Bosses are now worried that the messages colleagues write in the cards referring to bus passes or being ‘over the hill’ could fall foul of the new laws, reports ananova.com. The insurer has said that bosses will decide if cards are “appropriate” before they are sent out to staff.

Julian Boughton, managing director, said: “The new rules are a potential minefield. Messages can so easily be misinterpreted and we don’t want to offend.”
