3,000 extra workers in North East

An additional 3,000 people have left long-term sickness or incapacity and become available for work in the North East, according to latest Government figures. The October employment figures from the Office for National Statistics has matched the year-on-year rise in unemployment, illustrating that the pool of available labour in the region had widened.

Mike Parker, spokesman for the North East Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is yet another positive step for the North East economy. We have seen a surge over the past year in the number of people leaving long-term sickness or incapacity and becoming available for work. “From an employer’s perspective, that widens the pool of talent available to fill vacancies. From the point of view of the economy, this can only be a benefit as the region pushes to get more people into jobs.”
