?Police league tables misleading? ? Cleveland Police

Attempts to produce a league table of police forces have been criticised as “crude and misleading – like comparing apples and pears” by the Chair of Cleveland Police Authority.

Information on police performance has been released by the Home Office. Northumbria has been revealed as one of the best forces in the country, and Cleveland is the sixth worst.

Councillor Dave McLuckie, Chair of Cleveland Police Authority said: “The Government has described the idea of trying to turn the Police Performance Assessments into a ‘league table’ as unhelpful and inaccurate – and I could not agree more. It is like trying to compare apples and pears – crude and misleading. “The publication of ‘league tables’ which attempt to rate metropolitan areas with rural shire forces such as North Yorkshire and Durham gives an entirely distorted picture of the assessments and certainly does not help public understanding of the quality of service delivered by their local force.”

The Home Office has stated that the findings are not intended to be compiled into a league table.
