TV fame for region's landmark

Hadrian’s Wall is to be the star of a BBC Timewatch documentary due to be screened later this month. The wall and surrounding areas are presented as a time capsule, offering clues about Roman communities from almost 2,000 years ago. The programme will provide an insight into the people who once lived along the original line of the Wall.

Humphrey Welfare from English Heritage said: “Timewatch is a must-see for anyone interested in history and archaeology – and we’re delighted to be involved in the making of this programme. It really helps bring Hadrian’s Wall to life. We hope viewers will feel inspired to visit our sites along the Wall such as Chesters, Housesteads, Vindolanda, Maryport, Segedunum and Birdoswald Roman Forts. Here they can find on-site museums full of archaeological finds and artists impressions of how the settlements would have looked.”

Vineet Lal, communications and branding director for Hadrian’s Wall Heritage said: “The programme will showcase nationally some of the best examples of Roman heritage in Britain today and will also include a reconstruction of how this amazing feat of engineering once looked. I hope it inspires BBC viewers to visit Hadrian’s Wall Country and experience this great history first hand.”

Timewatch featuring Hadrian’s Wall will be broadcast on Friday 26 January 2007 on BBC 2.
